Функції широкозначних слів англійської мови у процесі їхньї семантизації

У статті виявлено функції широкозначних слів англійської мови у процесі їхньої семантизації; визначено широкозначність як лексико-семантичну категорію та розглянуто особливості функціонування широкозначних лексем в англійській мові. Розкрито здатність цих лексем виражати значення тільки у сполученні з іншими мовними одиницями на фоні контексту або ситуації.
Схарактеризовано функції, що виконують широкозначні слова.

The article deals with some aspects of semantization of wide meaning words and defines the wide meaning (or the wide semantics) as the lexico-semantique category and examines the functional peculiarities of wide meaning English lexemes. Revealed is the capability of such lexemes to express their meanings only in
the combination with other units of language against a background of a context or a situation. The functions of wide meaning words are described, respectively. Notably, wide meaning units of language can perform indicative, substitute, identifying, text-formative and stylistic functions; they correlate with the fragment of
foregoing (antecedent) or following (postcedent) text and establish contextual-syntactic connections (cataphoric, anaphoric and two-way ones). The article also discloses the major mechanisms of semantics formation of the eurysemes in English.
