Abstract
This article explores the role of physical training as a rehabilitation tool during World War I, highlighting the innovations in the use of physical exercises and mechanical devices for the restoration of physical functions in soldiers. The study analyzes various rehabilitation methods that combined physical exercises with therapeutic procedures, as well as the use of prosthetics and mechanotherapy. Significant attention is given to the development of rehabilitation centers, their role in restoring soldiers, and the organization of specialized procedures for treating different types of injuries and illnesses, such as limb wounds, nervous disorders, respiratory, and cardiovascular problems. The article emphasizes how these approaches contributed to the functional recovery of the body and the psychological well-being of war veterans. It also examines the cultural and national influences on rehabilitation practices in different armies, including those of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The effectiveness of physical rehabilitation methods during and after the war is evaluated, with a particular focus on their impact on physical recovery and mental health. This study also highlights the advancements in medical rehabilitation, particularly in terms of the integration of innovative approaches to treatment. These developments played a crucial role in shaping the modern practices of physical therapy and rehabilitation, offering valuable insights for future applications in healthcare.
During World War I, medical personnel faced unprecedented challenges due to the large number of injured soldiers, leading to the evolution of rehabilitation practices. As the war progressed, the need for effective treatment to restore soldiers’ mobility and functionality became apparent. The article examines how physical exercises, combined with emerging medical technologies, contributed to the rehabilitation of soldiers. The use of prosthetic devices became an essential part of rehabilitation, allowing soldiers who lost limbs to regain some independence and functionality. Furthermore, mechanotherapy and other rehabilitative techniques were developed and refined during this period, providing new methods to address the physical and psychological trauma caused by the war.
The establishment of rehabilitation centers became a critical component of post-war care, where injured soldiers received specialized treatments. These centers were pivotal not only in addressing physical injuries but also in aiding psychological recovery. By combining physical exercise with psychological support, rehabilitation efforts helped veterans reintegrate into civilian life and recover from the mental scars of war.
The article also explores the international scope of rehabilitation practices, comparing the approaches used by different nations involved in the conflict. The distinct cultural and national characteristics of the French, German, and British military forces influenced how rehabilitation was organized and implemented. The article evaluates the effectiveness of these methods, emphasizing the importance of physical rehabilitation in enhancing the overall health of war veterans and its lasting impact on the field of medical rehabilitation.
This research highlights the innovative advancements made in rehabilitation during World War I and their lasting contributions to the development of modern rehabilitative care. The lessons learned from this period continue to inform contemporary rehabilitation practices and underscore the importance of comprehensive care in the recovery process for individuals experiencing physical and psychological trauma.
